Both can be excellent when designed and fitted properly. Getting the structure, insulation and weatherproofing right matters just as much as the covering you choose.

Start With the Roof Shape, Not the Material

A pitched extension roof generally works well where you want to match the appearance of the main house. It gives rainwater a clear route into gutters and allows for traditional materials such as tiles, slate or metal sheeting. It can also create more internal height, depending on the design.

A flat roof is often the practical choice for rear extensions, kitchen extensions, garages and ground-floor additions. Despite the name, it is never completely flat. It needs a slight fall so rainwater runs towards the outlet or gutter rather than sitting on the surface.
